When starting Element Equipment, one area we wanted to address was distillation. The craft spirits industry is going through an incredibly exciting stage, where producers all around the world are pushing boundaries and coming up with some truly amazing products. The number of distilleries in the UK is at an all time high, and the appetite for small batch spirits of quality, from skilful artisan distillers continues to grow. There are also breweries, cider makers, wineries and pubs/bars who are considering making their own ranges of craft spirits to complement their offering. Hobbyists also want to make decent quantites of their own spirits.
We thought long and hard about where we could source distilling equipment. We wanted a partner who could work with us to bring high quality equipment and amazing service to Europe. We decided to look across the Atlantic to the USA, which is enjoying its own craft spirits boom. We wanted to talk to somebody who is helping craft distillers make the product they always dreamed of making.
It didn't take us long to find Matt Haney, of HBS Copper, in Barlow, Kentucky. HBS Copper is a family owned and operated business. The founder, Mike Haney, started by building stills at home in his spare time, and as demand soared, they chose to go into full scale production. We heard that every system is hand-built, based on the understanding that each client has their own unique set of requirements, and need a unique system to meet those needs. They have used their considerable experience to ensure they build systems which are efficient, user friendly, and fairly priced. Coupled with this is an unwavering commitment to providing high quality, as well as supporting their clients from the very beginning, and throughout the life of their equipment.
Our first call with Matt confirmed everything we thought. Here was a group of people who oozed integrity and passion. Their primary goal is to build quality equipment for their customers, and to act as a true partner to them all. They have a vast selection of references from people who are now making the products they dreamed of. And they make smaller hobby stills too! So, we are now working together to offer HBS distilling systems to hobbyists and craft distillers across Europe. We're looking forward to it immensely.
